3rd DCLI recruiting march, The Lizard, Landewednack, Cornwall. 29th June 1915

Lance Corporal Thomas Rendle VC is standing on the left and Coast Guard Edwards is in the centre. Lance Corporal Rendle was born in Bedminster, Bristol, on the 14th December 1884. At the time of his award he was a bandsman in the 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry and was acting as a stretcher bearer. He was 29 years old. His citation reads " For his conspicuous bravery on 20 November 1914 near Wulvergem, when he attended to the wounded under very heavy shell fire and rifle fire, and rescued men from the trenches in which they had been buried by the blowing in of the parapets by the fire of the enemys heavy howitzers". He was the only stretcher bearer to receive a Victoria Cross in World War 1. His medal is held at the DCLI museum in Bodmin. He was awarded the medal by King George V on 12 July 1915. He died in 1946 in Cape Town South Africa. Coast Guard Edwards is wearing naval uniform. The Coast Guard (later known as Coastguard) was part of the Admiralty between 1856 and 1923. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the 3rd DCLI recruiting march at The Lizard, Landewednack, Cornwall on the 29th of June, 1915. Amongst the brave soldiers standing tall is Lance Corporal Thomas Rendle VC, positioned on the left side of the image. Born in Bedminster, Bristol on December 14th, 1884, Lance Corporal Rendle was a bandsman in the esteemed 1st Battalion of Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry when he received his prestigious Victoria Cross. At just 29 years old during his commendation, Lance Corporal Rendle displayed remarkable courage near Wulvergem on November 20th, 1914. Despite facing relentless shell and rifle fire from enemy forces, he fearlessly tended to wounded comrades and rescued trapped men buried beneath collapsed trenches caused by heavy howitzer bombardment. Lance Corporal Rendle's extraordinary bravery earned him a unique distinction as the sole stretcher bearer to receive a Victoria Cross during World War I. His well-deserved medal now resides at the DCLI museum in Bodmin as a testament to his selflessness and heroism. King George V himself awarded this prestigious honor to Lance Corporal Rendle on July 12th, 1915. Also featured prominently in this historic photograph is Coast Guard Edwards donning naval attire. During its existence between1856 and1923 under Admiralty jurisdiction, the Coast Guard played an integral role in maritime operations safeguarding coastal areas. Preserved through time by photographer Arthur William Jordan, this poignant image serves as a powerful reminder of these valiant individuals' contributions towards preserving freedom and protecting their homeland amidst tumultuous times.
