The Forecourt, Lanhydrock - A Glimpse into Cornwall's Stately Past
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the enchanting month of May in 1930. Standing proudly amidst the picturesque countryside of Cornwall, we find ourselves gazing upon the magnificent forecourt of Lanhydrock. The grandeur of this historic site is truly awe-inspiring. Built in the 17th century for the esteemed Robartes family, this stately home exudes an air of elegance and sophistication that has withstood the test of time. However, tragedy struck in 1881 when a devastating fire engulfed much of the house, leaving only remnants behind. Undeterred by adversity, a remarkable reconstruction effort took place shortly after to restore its former glory. In this striking image captured by Herbert Hughes, we witness not only the resplendent north wing but also catch a glimpse of the entrance porch and gatehouse that survived unscathed from that fateful blaze. These architectural marvels stand as a testament to human resilience and determination. Today, thanks to its historical significance and architectural splendor, Lanhydrock House stands proudly under National Trust ownership since 1953. Visitors can explore its opulent interiors adorned with period furniture and stroll through meticulously manicured gardens while immersing themselves in centuries-old tales whispered within these hallowed walls. As we admire this photograph print from Royal Cornwall Museum, it serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst destruction lies an opportunity
