Freemasons Hall, formerly the Convocation Hall of the Duchy Palace, Quay Street, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. Early 1900s

A view of Freemasons Hall, also known as Duchy Palace, Stannary Palace and Shire Hall, from the corner of Quay Street and Fore Street. A young boy, carrying a case and basket, stands for the photographer. The Duchy Palace was built by Edmund Earl of Cornwall in 1292. In 1337, when the Black Prince became the Duke of Cornwall, he made the Palace his administrative centre, where the Courts, Treasury, Maritime offices and the tin industry were run from. The building, made from local stone, once reached along the quay much further than today, but it was badly damaged during the Siege of Lostwithiel in 1644. The remaining building, seen in the photograph, was formerly the Convocation Hall of the Duchy Palace. The hall was sold to the Freemasons in 1878, who carried out restorations and alterations. When the building was purchased by The Princes Foundation (formerly the Princes Regeneration Trust) in 2009 it was on the Buildings at Risk Register. The hall has since been developed into a business and retail space to benefit the local community and economy. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Freemasons Hall, formerly known as the Convocation Hall of the Duchy Palace, in Lostwithiel, Cornwall during the early 1900s. The grand building stands proudly at the corner of Quay Street and Fore Street, exuding an air of majesty and significance. In this snapshot frozen in time, a young boy takes center stage as he poses for the photographer while carrying a case and basket. His presence adds a touch of innocence amidst the architectural splendor surrounding him. The origins of this remarkable structure date back to 1292 when it was built by Edmund Earl of Cornwall. Over time, it served various purposes including being used as an administrative center by none other than the Black Prince himself when he became Duke of Cornwall in 1337. From here, important functions such as courts, treasury operations, maritime offices, and even tin industry affairs were managed. Though damaged during the Siege of Lostwithiel in 1644, parts of this magnificent edifice still stand today. The remaining section seen in this photograph was once home to the Convocation Hall within Duchy Palace before being sold to Freemasons in 1878. They undertook extensive restorations and alterations to preserve its historical significance. Fast forward to more recent times; The Princes Foundation (formerly known as The Princes Regeneration Trust) acquired this iconic hall in 2009 when it was listed on Buildings at Risk Register. Since then, it has been transformed into a thriving business and retail space that benefits both local community and economy alike. As we gaze upon this image captured by an unknown photographer from years gone by, we are reminded not only of its rich history but also how preservation efforts have allowed future generations to appreciate its grandeur anew.
