Site of the Headland Hotel, Newquay, Cornwall. Probably 1897

A view of the site of the not yet built Headland Hotel, known as Fistral Meadow. There are several people, including a lady cyclist, probably around the time of the riots of 31st August 1897. The proposed site of the hotel had previously been used as land on which farmers grazed livestock and local fishermen dried their nets. The proposals of architect, Silvanus Trevail, threatened to ruin their livelihoods. When building work commenced, outraged farmers and fishermen rushed to the site, where they tore down the wooden works office and valuable tools and planks of wood were hurled off the cliff onto the beach. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Newquay, Cornwall. Taken around 1897, it depicts the site where the Headland Hotel would soon stand, known as Fistral Meadow at that time. In this snapshot of history, we see several individuals, including a lady cyclist who adds a touch of elegance to the scene. The timing of this photograph is particularly intriguing as it coincides with the riots that erupted on August 31st, 1897. The proposed construction plans by architect Silvanus Trevail had stirred up immense controversy among local farmers and fishermen whose livelihoods were threatened by these changes. Prior to being chosen for development, this very land served as grazing grounds for livestock and an area where fishermen dried their nets. Outraged by these proposals, furious farmers and fishermen flocked to the site when building work commenced. Their anger was palpable as they tore down the wooden works office while hurling valuable tools and planks off the cliff onto the beach below. This image not only showcases an idyllic coastal landscape but also serves as a powerful reminder of how disputes over common ground can ignite intense emotions within communities. It stands testament to both progress and resistance in shaping Newquay's future during this transformative period. Photographer: Unknown
