EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this historic print from the Royal Cornwall Museum archives, we are transported back to the summer of 1893 at the Cornwall County Fisheries Exhibition. The image showcases two pilchard drivers gracefully sailing under a billowing sail, as they venture out to sea. This scene epitomizes the rich maritime heritage and fishing traditions that have long been ingrained in the Cornish culture. The front boat, proudly registered in St Ives and numbered SS516, takes center stage with its sturdy mast and intricate rigging. Its presence is a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of local shipbuilders who meticulously crafted these vessels for life on treacherous waters. The second boat follows closely behind, both boats seemingly synchronized as they navigate through gentle waves. This particular photograph was taken by an unknown photographer as part of a series of glass lantern slides documenting various aspects of the Fisheries Exhibition. Held at Truro's Lemon Street field from July 25th until August 1893, this month-long event aimed to celebrate and promote Cornwall's thriving fishing industry. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but admire not only the sheer beauty of these boats against a backdrop of endless blue sea but also appreciate the dedication and resilience demonstrated by these men who braved unpredictable conditions day after day. It serves as a poignant reminder of our deep connection with nature and our enduring reliance on it for sustenance.
