EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Truro, Cornwall, before 1891. The view from the west end of Boscawen Street looking east showcases a vibrant scene that is now steeped in history. The photograph's date is marked as pre-1891, which becomes significant when we learn that N. Gill and Son's furniture and carpet store relocated across the street later that year. In the heart of this snapshot stands the magnificent Victorian Coinage Hall, occupying the site where a stannary building dating back to the 14th century once stood. Its grandeur dominates the center of attention, capturing our imagination with its architectural beauty. The photographer remains unknown but has skillfully hand-colored this image to resemble a serene night-time setting. This artistic touch adds an enchanting ambiance to an already mesmerizing composition. As we explore further into this historical gem, our eyes are drawn towards other notable features such as a charming water pump standing proudly amidst cobbles and granite sets. Gas lighting illuminates these streets, casting warm glows on their surroundings—a testament to technological advancements during this era. This remarkable photograph not only offers us a glimpse into Truro's past but also serves as a reminder of how much has changed over time while preserving elements unique to Cornish heritage.
