A view over Truro, Cornwall from the south east with the uncompleted cathedral. Between July 1903 and February 1904

Truro from the south east with a view of the incomplete cathedral. The central tower, shown in place, was completed in July 1903 but the western towers, which were opened in 1910, are still under construction. The new Carvedras Viaduct can be seen on the left hand side of the photograph. The all stone structure replaced Isambard Kingdom Brunels original timber fanned viaduct in 1902. Brunels original stone and timber Moresk Viaduct (also known as the Truro viaduct) can be seen on the right hand side. It was replaced by an all stone structure which opened on the 14th February 1904. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back in time to Truro, Cornwall, between July 1903 and February 1904. The view from the south east showcases the city's uncompleted cathedral as its centerpiece. In this snapshot of history, we witness the completion of the central tower in July 1903 while the western towers remain under construction until their opening in 1910. The photograph also captures another significant architectural marvel on the left-hand side – the newly built Carvedras Viaduct. This all-stone structure replaced Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original timber fanned viaduct in 1902, showcasing advancements in engineering during that era. On the right-hand side stands Brunel's original stone and timber Moresk Viaduct, commonly known as the Truro viaduct. However, it is not long for this world as an all-stone replacement was completed on February 14th, 1904 – just a few months after this image was taken. Photographer Arthur William Jordan skillfully captures a bustling street scene with intricate buildings that define urban life at that time. This general view of Truro provides us with a glimpse into its rich history and development over a century ago. As we admire this remarkable piece of Cornish heritage preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum, let us appreciate how far our towns have come while cherishing these snapshots from yesteryears.
