EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Liskeard and Looe Railway staff outside the wagon repair works at Moorswater in December 1908. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these hardworking individuals who played a crucial role in keeping the railway running smoothly. The front row showcases some key figures, including Mr H. Hawes, the stationmaster of Looe, and Mr S. Bolton, the locomotive superintendent. These men were responsible for overseeing operations and ensuring that everything ran efficiently on a day-to-day basis. Moving to the second row, we see various workers such as carmen, porters, fitters, guards, signalmen, and even a blacksmith. Each person had their own unique contribution to make in maintaining and operating this vital transportation system. The third row introduces us to more members of staff involved in maintenance work like painters, platelayers (responsible for laying tracks), firemen (who stoked coal into steam engines), drivers (in charge of operating locomotives), linesmen (responsible for electrical systems), carpenters (involved in repairs), among others. Finally, we have the fourth row consisting mainly of platelayers who worked tirelessly to ensure that tracks were well-maintained and safe for trains to pass through. This photograph serves as an important historical document capturing not just faces but also names - providing an invaluable record of those who dedicated themselves to keeping Cornwall's railways operational during this era.
