Anatomy and royalty, 17th century

Anatomy and royalty, 17th century. French anatomist Jean Riolan the Younger (lower left, 1577-1657) presenting a treatise on anatomy to the French King Louis XIII (right, 1601Ôé¼" 1643) in Paris. This artwork is the frontispiece to Riolans Anthropographia et osteologia (1626). The artwork, by the engraver Crispi de Pas, includes Latin text at top and bottom, and the biblical quote Honorum Medicum (honour physicians) on the book itself. Riolan, a contemporary of the English anatomist William Harvey, was a traditionalist who taught the 2nd-century theories of Galen and opposed the new ideas proposed by Harvey

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in 17th-century French history, where the worlds of anatomy and royalty collide. In this artwork, we witness the renowned French anatomist Jean Riolan the Younger presenting his treatise on anatomy to none other than King Louis XIII himself. The scene takes place in Paris, with Riolan positioned at the lower left corner while the king stands regally on the right. The frontispiece to Riolan's Anthropographia et osteologia (1626), expertly engraved by Crispi de Pas, serves as a testament to both artistry and scientific knowledge. Latin text adorns the top and bottom of this monochrome illustration, emphasizing its scholarly nature. Notably, it also features a biblical quote that reads "Honorum Medicum" reminding us of society's duty to honor physicians. Riolan was an influential figure during his time and held traditional beliefs rooted in Galen's theories from centuries before. As such, he opposed William Harvey's groundbreaking ideas that challenged established medical understanding. This historical snapshot showcases not only their contrasting perspectives but also highlights Riolan's dedication to preserving traditional teachings. Through this image, we glimpse into a world where science meets monarchy – where intellectual pursuits find patronage within royal courts. It is a testament to both human curiosity and societal support for advancements in medicine during Europe's vibrant 17th century.
