Apollo 17 astronauts

Apollo 17 astronauts. US astronauts Eugene Cernan and Dr Harrison Schmitt using their lunar rover to explore the Taurus-Littrow region of the Moon, as part of NASAs Apollo 17 mission. They landed on the Moon on 11 December 1972, and spent 75 hours on the surface. Ron Evans remained in orbit in the command module. Dr Schmitt, a geologist, is the only scientist to have landed on the Moon. Apollo 17 was the last Apollo mission, and Schmitt and Cernan are the last people to have walked on the Moon. A total of 12 US astronauts walked on the Moon during the eleven manned Apollo missions, from 1968-1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in space exploration as Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Dr. Harrison Schmitt embark on their lunar rover to explore the Taurus-Littrow region of the Moon. This remarkable image is a testament to human ingenuity and scientific curiosity, showcasing the final mission of NASA's Apollo program. Landing on December 11,1972, Cernan and Schmitt spent an impressive 75 hours on the Moon's surface while their colleague Ron Evans remained in orbit aboard the command module. Notably, Dr. Schmitt became the only scientist to have ever set foot on our celestial neighbor. The photograph showcases these intrepid explorers against a backdrop of rocky terrain, highlighting both their pioneering spirit and dedication to unraveling the mysteries of our solar system. The lunar rover they rely upon stands as a symbol of technological advancement during this early era of space travel. As we gaze at this scene frozen in time, we are reminded that Apollo 17 marked not only an end but also a beginning - it was both humanity's last venture onto the Moon and a stepping stone towards future discoveries beyond Earth's boundaries. This awe-inspiring image from Science Photo Library serves as a powerful reminder of mankind's relentless pursuit for knowledge and its boundless potential for exploration in our vast universe.
