Arctic woolly bear caterpillar

Arctic woolly bear moth caterpillar (Gynaephora groenlandica) being held in a hand. This species of moth (order: Lepidoptera) lives up to 14 years as a caterpillar before pupating into a moth that lives for one summer. It is only found in the high arctic and survives sub zero temperatures by hibernating during the cold season, which can last up to 10 months of the year. The caterpillar produces anti-freeze proteins that prevents its cells from freezing completely. During the summer months, it basks in the sun and feeds on vegetation. The body is covered with long hairs (setae) that minimise heat loss. Photographed in Nunavut, Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible resilience and adaptability of the Arctic woolly bear caterpillar, also known as the Arctic woolly bear moth caterpillar (Gynaephora groenlandica). Held delicately in a hand, this unique species of moth lives an astonishing 14 years as a caterpillar before transforming into a moth that only survives for one summer. Found exclusively in the high arctic regions, this remarkable creature has developed ingenious strategies to endure sub-zero temperatures. During the frigid cold season that can last up to 10 months of the year, it enters hibernation mode. To prevent its cells from freezing completely, it produces anti-freeze proteins – nature's own cryoprotectant. When summer arrives, this resilient larva emerges from its slumber and basks in the sun while feasting on vegetation. Its body is adorned with long hairs called setae which serve to minimize heat loss and provide insulation against extreme cold. Photographed amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Nunavut, Canada, this image captures not just an insect but a testament to survival in harsh environments. It serves as a reminder of nature's awe-inspiring diversity and highlights our planet's ability to nurture life even under extreme conditions. This photograph by Science Photo Library invites us into the fascinating world of arctic wildlife and offers us a glimpse into how these extraordinary creatures have adapted to thrive where few others can survive.
