Stage I (upper left), is where damage to the wall of the blood vessel allows cholesterol (LDL) to infiltrate. Stage II (upper right) is where more cholesterol is taken up by macrophages (a type of white blood cell) in response to the damage. Stage III (bottom) is where the macrophages are full of lipds (fats) and an atheroma has formed. In severe cases, this can block the blood vessel and cause strokes, angina and heart attacks
