Australian landscape
Australian landscape. This is Kakadu National Park on the north-western coast of Australia, east of Darwin. The landscape varies from lowland plains, some of which flood when the rains arrive, to the surrounding Arnhem Land plateau that used to form a sea cliff when a shallow sea covered the plains some 140 million years ago. Here, the outcrops of rock (large one in the background) are outlying parts of the plateau that have resisted erosion. They would have been islands in the ancient sea. A variety of plants and animals are found here, and Kakadu National Park is listed as a World Heritage Site
