Benjamin Brodie, British surgeon

Benjamin Brodie (1783-1862), British surgeon. Brodie became House Surgeon at St Georges Hospital in 1805. Between 1809 and 1814 he contributed six papers to the Royal Society in which he challenged the prevailing notion that body heat was caused by simple chemical combustion. As a result he rose to prominence and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1818 he published his Diseases of the Joints, which ran to several editions. He was a surgeon to both George IV and William IV, made a baronet (1834), President of the Royal College of Surgeons (1844), and first President of the General Medical Council (1858). 19th century engraving

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Benjamin Brodie, a renowned British surgeon whose contributions to the medical field were nothing short of revolutionary. Born in 1783, Brodie's career soared when he became House Surgeon at St Georges Hospital in 1805. However, it was his groundbreaking research that truly set him apart. In an era where body heat was believed to be caused by simple chemical combustion, Brodie challenged this prevailing notion through six influential papers published between 1809 and 1814. His findings propelled him into prominence and earned him a fellowship with the prestigious Royal Society. Brodie's expertise extended beyond his scientific achievements. He served as a trusted surgeon to both George IV and William IV, solidifying his reputation among royalty. In recognition of his exceptional skills and dedication to medicine, he was honored with a baronetcy in 1834. Not content with these accolades alone, Benjamin Brodie continued to make significant contributions throughout his illustrious career. He authored "Diseases of the Joints" in 1818—a seminal work that went on to have multiple editions—and assumed important roles such as President of the Royal College of Surgeons (1844) and first President of the General Medical Council (1858). This mesmerizing engraving from the 19th century captures not only Brodie's likeness but also serves as a testament to his lasting impact on medicine and surgery. It is an artful portrayal that pays homage to one of Britain's most distinguished physicians whose name will forever be etched in history books.
