Blood vessels in a frog ovary, SEM
Blood vessels in the ovary of a female frog, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Frogs produce hundreds of eggs, which are expelled and fertilised in the water. This is a resin cast: the blood vessels were filled with a liquid resin, which then set hard. The surrounding tissues were then removed chemically, leaving the cast. Magnification: x60 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of blood vessels within a frog ovary, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the vibrant colors that have been added to enhance the visual impact and highlight the complexity of this biological system. Frogs, as remarkable creatures, possess an extraordinary reproductive process. They produce numerous eggs that are released into water for fertilization. In this particular image, we witness a resin cast technique employed to create an accurate representation of the blood vessels in the ovary. Liquid resin was injected into these delicate structures and allowed to solidify, forming a detailed replica. The surrounding tissues were then meticulously removed through chemical processes, leaving behind only the intricately preserved cast of blood vessels. This method allows scientists and researchers to study and analyze the vascular anatomy with precision. At a magnification of x60 when printed at 10cm wide, every minute detail becomes visible—each vessel contributing to nourishing and sustaining life within this vital organ. The false coloring adds depth and clarity to aid our understanding of this complex circulatory system within female frogs' reproductive organs. This stunning photograph not only captures nature's beauty but also serves as an invaluable resource for zoologists, herpetologists, biologists, or anyone interested in exploring amphibian anatomy or reproductive systems in greater depth.
