Bootes constellations, 1829 C016 / 4394

Bootes constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 8, showing the constellations of Bootes (left), Canes Venatici (upper right), Coma Berenices (lower right) and Quadrans Muralis (top left)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the Bootes constellations, as depicted in a 19th-century celestial atlas. Created by Kornelius Reissig, an esteemed Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences, this early Russian star atlas was a remarkable contribution to astronomical knowledge. Drawing inspiration from earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed, Reissig meticulously mapped out the stars and constellations using mythological figures and animals. Plate 8 of this extraordinary artwork reveals a mesmerizing array of constellations including Bootes on the left, Canes Venatici in the upper right corner, Coma Berenices in the lower right corner, and Quadrans Muralis at the top left. The black background enhances their ethereal presence while gold leaf accents add a touch of elegance to each constellation. The use of Cyrillic labels adds an intriguing cultural dimension to this celestial map. Punched holes along with grid lines create a precise diagram that aids in locating specific coordinates within our vast night sky. As we gaze upon this historical masterpiece, we are transported back to a time when scientific exploration intertwined with artistic expression. This print serves as both an educational tool for understanding ancient astronomy and as a stunning piece of art that captures our imagination.
