Captain James Cook, British explorer

Captain James Cook (1728-1779), British explorer, navigator and cartographer. Captain James Cook first served in the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He was commissioned as Commander of the HMS Endeavour in 1766 and the next year began three Pacific voyages. It was during these voyages that he discovered the Hawaiian Islands, had the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and mapped the coastlines of Newfoundland and New Zealand.
