EDITORS COMMENTS
This satirical artwork, titled "Fever and Ague" captures the essence of a medical condition prevalent in the 18th century. Created by renowned English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson in 1788, this particular print was published in London four years later. The image portrays fever as a central monster with ague, represented by a creature wrapped around the patient on the left side. Fever, characterized by high body temperature, often induces shivering or ague. In this illustration, we see a doctor diligently writing out a prescription on the right-hand side. The scene is set in what appears to be a cozy bedroom with an inviting fireplace providing warmth and comfort. This piece of art offers insight into historical medical practices during that era. The print itself is from Eugen Hollander's book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine), published in Germany in 1921. Hollander was both an art historian and physician who compiled various artworks related to medicine throughout history. "Fever and Ague" serves as an intriguing example of how satire can be used to depict medical disorders while also shedding light on societal perceptions surrounding illness at that time. It showcases Rowlandson's talent for capturing human experiences through his unique artistic style.
