Chromatrope design, 1890
Chromatrope design, 19th-century artwork. Invented in 1846 by the Scottish physicist David Brewster (1781-1868), this device is similar to the earlier kaleidoscope. When rotated, the overlapping coloured plates produce patterns when backlit. These patterns can be projected into a wall using a projecting light (then called a magic lantern). Artwork from the 6th volume (second period of 1890) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable 19th-century artwork known as the Chromatrope design. Invented by the brilliant Scottish physicist David Brewster in 1846, this device bears similarities to its predecessor, the kaleidoscope. When set in motion, the overlapping colored plates within the Chromatrope produce mesmerizing patterns that come to life when illuminated from behind. These enchanting patterns can even be projected onto a wall using a projecting light, which was then referred to as a magic lantern. The artwork featured here is taken from the sixth volume of La Science Illustree, a popular French science weekly during that era. The image exemplifies how education and entertainment intertwined in history, with this technological marvel serving as an educational tool for both children and adults alike. As we delve into this snapshot of history, it's fascinating to witness how advancements in optics and physics led to such ingenious inventions like the Chromatrope. This monochrome illustration transports us back to an era where scientific discovery and artistic expression merged seamlessly. Let us appreciate this historical gem for its significance in shaping our understanding of color theory and visual perception while also acknowledging Louis Figuier's contribution through his renowned publication La Science Illustree.
