Colossus of Rhodes, 16th century artwork

Colossus of Rhodes with a ship, 16th century artwork. This vast bronze statue of the Greek sun god Helios, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, stood at the entrance to the harbour at Rhodes, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The statue, completed in 282 BC, was 33 metres tall. It was destroyed 56 years later in an earthquake. This is a woodcut from Cosmographie de Levant (1556), an account of travels in Asia, Greece, Palestine and Egypt by the French writer and explorer Andre Thevet (1502-1590)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Colossus of Rhodes, a remarkable 16th-century artwork. Standing proudly at the entrance to the harbour in Rhodes, Greece, this colossal bronze statue depicted Helios, the Greek sun god and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Erected in 282 BC and towering at a staggering height of 33 meters, it left all who beheld it in sheer amazement. Tragically, only 56 years after its completion, an earthquake devastated this magnificent structure. However, through this woodcut from Cosmographie de Levant (1556), we are granted a glimpse into its former glory. The French writer and explorer Andre Thevet meticulously documented his travels across Asia, Greece, Palestine, and Egypt within these pages. The monochrome illustration transports us back to that era as we witness ships arriving and departing from the bustling harbor beneath Helios' watchful gaze. This artwork not only serves as a testament to ancient geography but also sheds light on classical archaeology and historical significance. As we delve into history's depths with this image before us, our minds wander through time—imagining sailors entering or leaving Rhodes while basking in the radiant presence of Helios himself. It is an exploration that intertwines religion with artistry while highlighting European influence during those times. In essence, this print encapsulates both reverence for religious beliefs and admiration for human craftsmanship—a true homage to an extraordinary monument lost to antiquity yet forever etched within our collective memory.
