Colour SEM of atherosclerosis in coronary artery
Atherosclerosis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a cross-section through a human coronary artery of the heart showing athero- sclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a build-up of fatty plaques on the walls of arteries. The artery wall is brown; the inner lumen is blue; fatty plaque is yellow. Some 90% of the artery width is blocked. Blockage is partly due to plaque, and largely due to a hyperplastic reaction of cells in the artery wall which have multiplied. Atherosclerosis leads to irregular bloodflow and clot formation (red), which can block the coronary artery resulting in heart attack. Magnification: x32 at 6x7 cm size. x46 at 4x5ins
