Comet and Sun, artwork C015 / 0776

Comet and Sun, artwork. Comets are bodies of ice and dust that enter the inner solar system from the outer solar system. As they approach the Sun, the heat boils the ice, producing a coma around the nucleus, along with a tail stretching out behind it. This tail has two components, both shown here: a gas tail (blue) and a dust tail (white). The blue colour of the gas tail (actually an ionised plasma) is usually due to the presence of carbon monoxide ions. The gas tail points directly away from the Sun, while the dust tail is less affected by the solar wind and usually curves to one side

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Comet and Sun, artwork C015 / 0776" beautifully captures the mesmerizing phenomenon of comets as they journey through our solar system. Comets, composed of ice and dust, originate from the outer reaches of our solar system and venture closer to the Sun. As they approach its scorching heat, the ice begins to boil, creating a magnificent coma around the nucleus with an enchanting tail trailing behind. In this artwork by LYNETTE COOK/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we witness two distinct components of the comet's tail. The gas tail is depicted in a striking blue hue, caused by ionized plasma primarily consisting of carbon monoxide ions. This ethereal trail points directly away from the radiant Sun. On the other hand, we observe a white dust tail that curves gracefully due to its lesser interaction with the solar wind. The image showcases not only scientific marvel but also artistic brilliance as it illustrates how these celestial bodies transform under extreme conditions. It serves as a reminder of nature's awe-inspiring wonders and ignites curiosity about our vast universe. With elements such as icy particles evaporating into space and glowing cometary features against a backdrop of stars, this illustration invites us into an astrophysical realm where planetary science meets artistry. Let this visual masterpiece transport you on an astronomical journey beyond imagination while contemplating humanity's place within this cosmic tapestry.
