Common Alder Tree Pollen SEM C014 / 2144

Alder tree pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grains from an alder tree (Alnus glutinosa). A pollen grain contains a male sex cell from a flowering plant. Millions of pollen grains are produced by each flowering plant. In the process of pollination, some of these pollen grains are transported from a flowers anthers to the female reproductive parts of a plant. This allows the female and male sex cells to combine in the formation of a seed. Alder trees are fast-growing deciduous trees found mostly in the temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Magnification x6980 (x1725 at 10cm wide)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Common Alder Tree Pollen. Taken using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), this coloured micrograph reveals the mesmerizing details of pollen grains from an alder tree (Alnus glutinosa). Each grain contains a male sex cell, crucial for the reproductive process in flowering plants. The image highlights the significance of pollination, as millions of these tiny pollen grains are produced by each alder tree. During pollination, some grains are transported from the flower's anthers to its female reproductive parts. This enables the fusion of male and female sex cells, ultimately leading to seed formation. Alder trees, known for their rapid growth and deciduous nature, primarily thrive in temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere. With a magnification level reaching x6980 (x1725 at 10cm wide), this SEM image allows us to appreciate the remarkable complexity hidden within such minuscule structures. The photograph was captured by Power and Syred for Science Photo Library—an invaluable resource for scientific imagery. It serves as a reminder that even in seemingly insignificant elements like pollen grains lies an extraordinary world waiting to be explored and understood.
