Corvus constellations, 1829 C016 / 4411
Corvus constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 25, showing the constellations of Corvus (the Raven), part of Hydra (female water snake), the head of Centaurus, and Crater (the Cup)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of celestial cartography from the 19th century. Titled "Corvus constellations, 1829 C016 / 4411" this image is a reproduction of an early Russian star atlas created by Kornelius Reissig, an esteemed member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The print features Plate 25 of Reissig's atlas, revealing a mesmerizing array of stars and constellations against a striking black background. The constellations depicted include Corvus (the Raven), part of Hydra (a female water snake), the head of Centaurus, and Crater (the Cup). Each constellation is meticulously labeled in Cyrillic script and represented by mythological figures and animals. Reproduced with intricate detail, this historical artwork provides insight into the astronomical knowledge and artistic representation prevalent during that era. The gold leaf accents add elegance to the overall composition while punched holes indicate its original purpose as part of a larger publication. As one delves into this enchanting image, they are transported back to the early days of scientific exploration when astronomers relied on maps like these to navigate through the vastness of space. It serves as both a testament to human curiosity about our place in the universe and an exquisite example of celestial artistry. This print captures not only an important milestone in Russian astronomy but also invites us to marvel at the beauty and complexity found within our night sky.
