Libra constellations, 1829 C016 / 4406

Libra constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 20, showing the constellations of Libra (the Scales) and Scorpio (the Scorpion), along with Lupus (the Wolf) and Turdus Solitarius (lower right)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a rare and exquisite piece of astronomical history - the Libra constellations from the celestial atlas "Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh" by Kornelius Reissig. Created in 1829, this remarkable artwork was the earliest star atlas in Russia, drawing inspiration from earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. The image reveals Plate 20 of this magnificent atlas, featuring not only the graceful constellation of Libra (the Scales) but also Scorpio (the Scorpion), Lupus (the Wolf), and Turdus Solitarius. Each constellation is meticulously labeled in Cyrillic script and represented by mythological figures and animals, adding an enchanting touch to this historical masterpiece. Against a striking black background adorned with gold leaf accents, the intricate grid-like diagram provides a glimpse into how astronomers mapped out these celestial wonders during the 19th century. The punched holes on the plate indicate precise coordinates for each star within these constellations. This extraordinary artwork serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with the night sky. It invites us to appreciate both its scientific significance and artistic beauty while offering insight into our ancestors' understanding of our place within the cosmos. A true treasure preserved by LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this print allows us to marvel at centuries-old celestial cartography that continues to inspire awe and wonder today.
