Cotton boll weevil and cotton plant
Boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) with cotton plant (Gossypium sp.). The boll weevil is the most destructive cotton pest in North America. The adult insects measure 3-8.5 mm long. The females lay eggs in cotton flower buds (green, bottom left). When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the bud or boll tissue for 7-14 days before forming a pupa inside the bud (left, top). The adult develops within the pupa (left, second from top) and emerges fully grown (left, third from top) after about 5 days to cut itself out of the bud or boll. The adults feed on cotton flower buds, pollen or bolls

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate relationship between a cotton boll weevil and a cotton plant. The boll weevil, known as the most destructive pest to North American cotton crops, measures 3-8.5 mm in length as an adult insect. In this image, we witness the life cycle of these pests unfold. The female boll weevils lay their eggs within the green buds of cotton flowers seen at the bottom left corner of the photograph. Once hatched, the larvae feed on either bud or boll tissue for approximately 7-14 days before entering a pupa stage inside the same bud depicted at the top left section of this print. Within this protective casing, an adult develops over about five days until it emerges fully grown from its confinement, visible in various stages on the left side of this image. These adults sustain themselves by feeding on cotton flower buds, pollen, or even entire bolls. This stunning illustration not only highlights nature's intricate processes but also serves as a reminder of how devastating these insects can be to commercial agriculture and farming communities that rely heavily on cotton production. By capturing both beauty and destruction within one frame, Science Photo Library offers us insight into biological pathology while emphasizing our need for effective pest control strategies to protect vital crops like cotton from such harmful invaders like Anthonomus grandis - commonly known as the cotton boll weevil.
