Damaged human hair shaft SEM

Damaged human hair shaft, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This can be caused by overheating the hair using curling tongs or hair straigheners, as well as chemical dyes, back combing and over brushing. Hair straighteners can get so hot that the moisture inside the hair shaft can reach boiling temperatures, leaving the hair seriously damaged. The cuticle or scales which cover the outside of each hair shaft can be stripped off. The hair will become brittle, dry and frizzy causing breakages along the shaft. Magnification x 431 at 10cm wide

Brushing Cuticle Hair Hair Shaft Scales

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Damaged human hair shaft SEM" offers a close-up view of the detrimental effects caused by various styling practices and chemical treatments. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the consequences of overheating hair with curling tongs or straighteners, as well as using chemical dyes, backcombing, and excessive brushing. Hair straighteners, when excessively hot, can elevate the moisture inside the hair shaft to boiling temperatures, resulting in severe damage. This image showcases how these high temperatures strip off the protective cuticle or scales that cover each strand. As a result, the once lustrous locks become brittle, dry, and frizzy – prone to breakages along their length. With a magnification of x431 at 10cm wide, this photograph provides an intricate look into the microscopic world of damaged hair. It serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to care for our precious strands properly and avoid harmful practices that compromise their health. Captured by Power and Syred from Science Photo Library – renowned for its scientific imagery – this print highlights not only the aesthetic appeal but also educates viewers about potential risks associated with common hairstyling routines. Appreciating this artwork prompts us to reconsider our approach towards maintaining healthy hair while emphasizing responsible use of heat tools and minimizing exposure to damaging chemicals found in certain dyes.
