Dantis Equinoctial Armillary

Located on the south facade of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, this armillary sphere was designed and erected by Ignazio Danti in 1572 enabling him, with other instruments, to measure the exact length of the year by determining the true equinox. At the vernal equinox in March 1574 Danti observed that it was eleven days early according to the Julian calendar. This was one of the factors that led to the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1584

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Dantis Equinoctial Armillary, a magnificent astronomical instrument located on the south facade of Santa Maria Novella in Florence. Designed and erected by the brilliant Ignazio Danti in 1572, this armillary sphere played a crucial role in measuring the exact length of the year and determining the true equinox. With its intricate structure consisting of rings representing celestial circles and an array of other instruments, Danti utilized this masterpiece to observe and analyze various astronomical phenomena. In March 1574, during the vernal equinox, he made a groundbreaking discovery - according to the Julian calendar, it was occurring eleven days earlier than expected. This revelation proved pivotal as it contributed to one of history's most significant changes -the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1584. The accuracy provided by Danti's observations helped rectify discrepancies between solar time and traditional calendars. The photograph beautifully captures not only the armillary sphere but also emphasizes its connection with sunlight. The sun's rays cast enchanting shadows upon this scientific marvel, highlighting its importance as both an artistic masterpiece and a functional tool for studying celestial movements. Science Photo Library presents this stunning image that encapsulates centuries-old knowledge merging artistry with science at Santa Maria Novella. It serves as a reminder of humanity's ceaseless quest for understanding our place within the vast cosmos while honoring Ignazio Danti's invaluable contributions to astronomy.
