Desert sand dunes
Sand dunes, from space. White sand dunes in the Tularosa Basin at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico, USA. This area is the largest gypsum sand dune field in the world. These white dunes have engulfed over 700 square kilometres of desert. The gypsum (hydrated calcium sulphate) crystallised from the water of an ancient lake as it gradually evaporated. Photographed by the crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-108 of 5-17 December 2001
