Ethiopian animal, 16th century

Ethiopian animal. 16th-century artwork of Ethiopians with an animal called a hulpalim from the island of Zocotere near or off the coast of Ethiopia. This animal had a red pelt, resembled a large marmot, and had a face like a monkey s. The accompanying text described how it was kept in cages by the Ethiopians. Artwork from Cosmographie universelle (1575) by the French explorer and writer Andre Thevet (1516-1590). This book described the history and geography of the lands in which Thevet had travelled. The two volumes and four tomes contain over 1000 pages divided into 23 books. This woodcut is from chapter XI of book IIII
