Expanding universe, conceptual image

Expanding universe, conceptual image. The universe and its galaxies are shown on the surface of a balloon. As the balloon is inflated the galaxies recede from each other. The two-dimensional surface of the balloon is analogous to the three-dimensional fabric of space, showing that the motion of the galaxies is not through space, but is due to the expansion of space itself. In addition, there is no centre to this expansion as the universe will appear to be expanding uniformly from the point of view of any galaxy. This analogy was used by the British astronomer Arthur Eddington (1882-1944) in The Expanding Universe (1933)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the concept of an expanding universe in a visually striking manner. The image depicts the universe and its galaxies portrayed on the surface of a balloon, which serves as an analogy for the three-dimensional fabric of space. As the balloon is inflated, we witness how the galaxies recede from each other, illustrating that their motion is not through space but rather due to the expansion of space itself. One remarkable aspect highlighted by this artwork is that there is no center to this expansion. From any galaxy's perspective, it appears as though the entire universe uniformly expands away from them. This profound insight was first introduced by British astronomer Arthur Eddington in his influential work "The Expanding Universe" published in 1933. With its white background and meticulous attention to detail, this illustration beautifully captures key concepts within cosmology and astrophysics. It symbolizes fundamental ideas such as the Big Bang theory and demonstrates how our understanding of space-time has evolved over time. As a thought-provoking piece of art, this print invites viewers to contemplate our place within an ever-expanding cosmos while appreciating both its scientific significance and aesthetic appeal.
