Originally Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, he renamed himself Paracelsus (better than the Roman physician Celsus). 1500s 16th Century Alchemist Book Child Children Family Father Mother Paracelsus Physician Swiss Treatment Woodcut 1565 Sauna

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-century artwork, titled "Family in a Sauna" offers a fascinating glimpse into the medical practices of that era. Created by the renowned Swiss alchemist and physician Paracelsus, this woodcut print showcases a family undergoing cupping therapy while enjoying the warmth of a sauna. The scene depicts a mother, father, and their children gathered together in what appears to be an intimate setting. The family members are seen sitting comfortably inside the sauna as small heated vessels are applied to their skin for cupping therapy—a technique aimed at increasing blood flow. Paracelsus, originally known as Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, was not only an accomplished physician but also an avid traveler who sought to acquire knowledge from various cultures. His work often delved into both scientific and mystical aspects of medicine. This monochrome woodcut print is part of Paracelsus' renowned book Opus Chyrurgicum (1565), which explores his extensive research on medical treatments and remedies. Through this artwork, we catch a glimpse of how families in the 16th century engaged with healthcare practices within the comforting ambiance of saunas. Preserved by the National Library of Medicine's Science Photo Library collection, this historical piece serves as a testament to Paracelsianism—the unique blend of science and magic that defined Paracelsus' approach to medicine during his time.
