Fish louse, SEM

Fish louse. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of a fish louse (Argulus sp.) This freshwater crustacean is usually found on carp. The head (bottom right) has two reduced antennae (spiked) above the eyes (stalk-like). Two suckers (round, pink) are modification of the maxillae. Below these are arm-like mouthparts. The louse attaches itself to a fishs gill covering and feeds on mucus, scales and blood. Magnification: x10 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

Colored Crustacean Louse Parasite Suckers Under Side Ventral Blue Background

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a fish louse, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the underside of this freshwater crustacean, known as Argulus sp. , which commonly resides on carp. Its unique features are beautifully highlighted against a vibrant blue background. At first glance, one cannot help but be drawn to the spiked antennae positioned above its stalk-like eyes. These reduced appendages add to its distinct appearance. Additionally, two round pink suckers can be observed below these structures; they are actually modified maxillae that aid in attachment and feeding. The arm-like mouthparts located beneath the suckers serve an essential purpose for this parasite's survival. By attaching itself to a fish's gill covering, it gains access to mucus, scales, and blood - crucial sources of sustenance. With a magnification level of x10 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, every minute detail is brought into focus. This photograph not only provides valuable insights into the biology and zoology of this fascinating creature but also serves as a testament to nature's diversity. Displayed by Science Photo Library with no commercial intentions mentioned or implied, this image offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate the wonders found within our aquatic ecosystems while marveling at the beauty hidden within even seemingly insignificant organisms like fish lice.
