Flight height of birds, historical art

Flight height of birds. Coloured historical artwork showing the maximum flight heights of various birds. The scale down the left edge of the image gives the altitude in metres, from sea level up to 9000 metres, which is higher than Mount Everest. The only bird known to fly so high is the Andean condor (top right). At lower levels, the birds include the vulture (below condor) and the eagle (below vulture at 5000 metres). Lower yet are the swallows (lower right) and swans (lower left). On the ground near sea level is a pheasant, while on the sea is the flightless penguin. This artwork was published in The Atmosphere by Camille Flammarion, in 1873

This historical artwork titled "Flight Height of Birds" takes us back to the 19th century, showcasing the awe-inspiring heights reached by various avian species. The vibrant illustration presents a spectrum of birds soaring through the skies at different altitudes, offering a glimpse into their remarkable abilities. The scale on the left side of the image provides altitude measurements in meters, ranging from sea level up to an astonishing 9000 meters - surpassing even the towering Mount Everest. At this extraordinary height stands the majestic Andean condor, known as the sole bird capable of reaching such lofty realms.
