Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov (1921-1992), Soviet orthopaedic surgeon, demonstrating the orthopaedic apparatus that he developed. Ilizarov is most famous for inventing the Iliazarov apparatus, used to carry out lengthenings of leg and arm bones. The apparatus holds the bones in place as they heal, pulling them apart at a rate of around a millimetre a day. Iliazarovs awards include the Lenin Prize and Hero of Socialist Labour.
