Grande Roue de Paris, 1900 C016 / 4498

Grande Roue de Paris. 20th-century photochrom (photographic lithograph) of the Grande Roue de Paris, a large Ferris wheel built in Paris, France, for the Exposition Universelle (1900). At right is the far end of one of the exhibition halls for the exposition (a Worlds Fair). In the background at left is the Eiffel Tower (1889), built for the Exposition Universelle (1889). At 300 metres in height, the Eiffel Tower was at the time the tallest man-made construction in the world. The Grande Roue de Paris was 100 metres high, and the largest Ferris wheel in the world. It was demolished in 1920. This photochrom is from the Detroit Publishing Company

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the grandeur of Paris in the early 20th century. The image showcases the magnificent Grande Roue de Paris, a colossal Ferris wheel that stood tall at 100 meters, making it the largest of its kind in the world. Built for the Exposition Universelle in 1900, this architectural marvel attracted visitors from far and wide. In this vividly colored photochrom, we can also catch a glimpse of one of the exhibition halls for the Worlds Fair on the right side. Its vastness hints at an array of wonders and innovations that awaited those who stepped inside. And towering over everything is none other than Gustave Eiffel's iconic creation - the Eiffel Tower. At a staggering height of 300 meters, it held its title as humanity's tallest man-made structure during that time. As we admire this historical snapshot, we are transported to an era where technology and engineering were pushing boundaries like never before. This photolithograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also represents France's rich history and cultural heritage. Although both structures have long since vanished from Paris' urban landscape - with Grande Roue de Paris meeting its fate in 1920 - their legacy lives on through photographs like these. Thanks to Detroit Publishing Company's artistry and Library of Congress' preservation efforts, we can still appreciate these remarkable feats of architecture today.
