Hartmanns Mountain Zebra

Classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, the life expectancy of the Hartmanns Zebra (equus hartmannae) is between 25 to 30 years. They are not considered seasonal breeders since mares can foal any time of the year, but most foal sometime during the rainy season when the grass is at its best. Gestation, is 300 to 365 days. These diurnal herbivores are good climbers. Approximately 25000 are left in the wild. These fighting stallions were photographed in Etosha National Park, Namibia, Southern Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Hartmanns Mountain Zebra, a species classified as vulnerable by the IUCN. With a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years, these zebras roam the arid savannas of Southern Africa, particularly in Namibia's renowned Etosha National Park. These diurnal herbivores possess an impressive ability to climb and navigate their rugged habitat with ease. Their distinctive black and white stripes create a striking contrast against the African landscape, making them a true symbol of wilderness. The photograph captures a powerful moment between two fighting stallions, showcasing their strength and dominance within their social hierarchy. These intense battles are not uncommon among male zebras as they compete for mating rights and establish their territories. With only approximately 25,000 individuals remaining in the wild, this image serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these remarkable creatures from further decline. Photographed by Tony Camacho for Science Photo Library, this stunning portrayal encapsulates both the beauty and vulnerability of Hartmanns Mountain Zebras in their natural habitat. It is through such visual storytelling that we can raise awareness about these magnificent animals' plight and inspire action towards safeguarding their future survival.
