Head of a silkmoth, Samia cynthia C015 / 6233
The head of a recently emerged Chinese silkmoth, Samia cynthia. The adult moth ( the imago ) has no mouthparts, and lives for only a few days. During that time it mates, and the females lay their eggs before dying. Silkmoths have very large feathery antennae, the branches of which contain many fine hairs that act as sensory organs ( called sensilla ). Some sense movement, while others are adapted to recognising scent, such as the pheromones produced by a potential female mate, as well as the smell of a plant suitable as an egg-laying site. Antenna Imago Samia Cynthia Scent Sensilla Sensory Organ
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate head of a recently emerged Chinese silkmoth, scientifically known as Samia cynthia C015 / 6233. The adult moth, also referred to as the imago, has a fascinating life cycle that lasts only a few fleeting days. During this brief period, their primary focus is on mating and reproduction before they gracefully bid farewell to the world. One cannot help but be mesmerized by the silkmoth's distinctive feature – its remarkably large feathery antennae. These delicate appendages are adorned with countless fine hairs that serve as sensory organs called sensilla. Each hair plays a crucial role in detecting specific stimuli; some are finely tuned to sense movement while others possess an exceptional ability to recognize scents. The scent-sensing sensilla enable these enchanting creatures to navigate their surroundings effectively. They can detect pheromones emitted by potential female mates and identify suitable plants for egg-laying purposes based on their distinct aroma. This remarkable adaptation showcases nature's ingenuity at its finest. In this one-day-old adult moth captured in the image, we witness the pinnacle of beauty and fragility intertwined harmoniously. It serves as a poignant reminder of life's ephemeral nature and highlights the extraordinary wonders found within our natural world. (Photo Credit: DR JEREMY BURGESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
