Industrial amber extraction

Industrial amber extraction. Mining machines being used to extract amber from an open-cast pit area. This pit is part of the Primorskoye deposit near Yantarny, a settlement in Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian enclave on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Amber is the fossilised resin of various conifer trees. Most of the worlds known deposits of amber are found in and around the Baltic Sea, where it is mined for use as jewellery, but also for industrial and chemical applications. Photographed in April 2010

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the process of industrial amber extraction in a vast open-cast pit area. The Primorskoye deposit near Yantarny, nestled in the Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian enclave on the Baltic Sea shores, serves as the backdrop for this remarkable scene. Amber, which is fossilized resin derived from conifer trees, is predominantly found in and around the Baltic Sea region. This precious gemstone is not only sought after for its use in exquisite jewelry but also finds applications in various industrial and chemical sectors. The image captures mining machines diligently at work within this expansive landscape. These technological marvels play a crucial role in excavating and extracting amber from beneath the earth's surface. However, it is important to acknowledge that such extensive mining activities can result in environmental damage. Photographed during April 2010, this snapshot offers us a glimpse into Europe's 21st-century mining industry. The presence of massive excavators engaged in strip mining highlights both the scale and impact of these operations on natural resources. Science Photo Library presents this photograph as an exploration of geological wonders rather than promoting any specific company or commercial enterprise associated with amber extraction. It invites viewers to appreciate both the beauty and complexity involved in harnessing Earth's treasures while raising awareness about potential environmental consequences tied to industrial practices like these.
