John Dryden, English poet and playwright

John Dryden (1631-1700), English poet and playwright. Dryden was born in Northamptonshire, the eldest of 14 children. In 1644 he went to Westminster School where he received a classical education. In 1650 he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge and graduated in 1654. He then moved to London and shortly after the death of Cromwell published his first major poem, Heroique Stanzas. He was soon established as the leading poet and playwright of the Restoration era. He excelled in Restoration Comedy, his best known being Marriage a la Mode. His poetry established the use of the heroic couplet, influential to writers such as Pope, and he made translations of Virgil, Homer and Ovid. In 1668 he was made Poet laureate. This engraving by Jacobous Houbraken, based on a portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller, is from Birchs The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain published in 1752

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed John Dryden, an influential English poet and playwright of the 17th century. Born in Northamptonshire, Dryden was the eldest among his 14 siblings. He received a classical education at Westminster School before pursuing higher studies at Trinity College, Cambridge. Upon moving to London, Dryden swiftly established himself as the leading poet and playwright during the Restoration era. His talent shone brightly in Restoration Comedy, with "Marriage a la Mode" being one of his most renowned works. Notably, he revolutionized poetry by popularizing the use of heroic couplets, leaving an indelible mark on future writers like Pope. Dryden's literary prowess extended beyond original compositions; he also translated epic works by Virgil, Homer, and Ovid into English. Such translations further solidified his reputation as a master wordsmith. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to literature and culture, Dryden was appointed Poet Laureate in 1668. This remarkable engraving by Jacobous Houbraken is based on a portrait painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller—an exquisite representation capturing Dryden's essence. Published in 1752 as part of Birchs The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain collection, this monochromatic print offers us a glimpse into the life and legacy of John Dryden—a visionary writer whose impact continues to resonate through time.
