Joseph Plateau, Belgian physicist C017 / 0689
Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau (1801-1883), Belgian (Wallonian) physicist and pioneer in optical devices. Plateau studied at the University of Liege. He then taught mathematics and published on the mixing of colours leading to his doctorate. In the 1830s, he invented optical devices: the anorthoscope and phenakistiscope (an early stroboscopic device). He became professor of physics at the University of Ghent in 1835, but by 1843 had become blind. He continued to work in physics, publishing collections of his research on a range of topics including liquid films, surface tension, irradiation and hydrostatics. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Joseph Plateau, a remarkable Belgian physicist and pioneer in optical devices. Born in 1801, Plateau studied at the prestigious University of Liege where he excelled in mathematics and conducted groundbreaking research on the mixing of colors, earning him a doctorate. In the 1830s, Plateau's inventive mind led him to create two revolutionary optical devices: the anorthoscope and phenakistiscope. These early stroboscopic devices allowed for mesmerizing visual illusions that captivated audiences worldwide. Despite his immense contributions to science, tragedy struck when Plateau became blind by 1843. However, his passion for physics remained undeterred as he continued to work tirelessly on various topics such as liquid films, surface tension, irradiation, and hydrostatics. The wood engraving featured here dates back to around 1888 and portrays a head-and-shoulders portrait of this visionary scientist. It is a poignant reminder of both his brilliance and the challenges he faced due to his disability. Joseph Plateau's legacy lives on as an inspiration for generations of scientists who strive to push boundaries despite adversity. This monochrome artwork serves as a testament to his invaluable contributions in the field of optics while shedding light on the historical significance of this extraordinary individual.
