Kew Observatory
Kew Observatory. Kew Observatory was built by Sir William Chambers for King George III to watch the transit of Venus (when Venus crosses the Suns face as seen from Earth) in 1769. In 1841 Kew Observatory was no longer royal property and was controlled by the British Association from 1842 until 1871, in which year it was handed to the Royal Society. In 1900, the National Physical Laboratory took over the management, followed by the Meteorological Office in 1910. Because the Meteorological Office still manages the observatory today, it is primarily used for weather observations

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Kew Observatory, a remarkable structure built by Sir William Chambers for King George III in 1769. Originally constructed to observe the rare transit of Venus across the Sun's face, this architectural gem served as a royal property until 1841. From then on, it fell under the control of the British Association until 1871 when it was handed over to the prestigious Royal Society. Over time, Kew Observatory underwent several transformations in its purpose and management. In 1900, it became managed by the National Physical Laboratory before being taken over by the Meteorological Office in 1910. Today, this iconic observatory remains under their stewardship and continues to play a vital role in weather observations. Located in Richmond, United Kingdom, Kew Observatory stands as a testament to both scientific advancement and architectural brilliance. Its significance extends beyond meteorology alone; it has also contributed immensely to various fields such as astrophysics and astronomy. This stunning print captures not only the grandeur of this historical building but also serves as a reminder of its enduring legacy within scientific research and discovery. As we gaze upon this image from Science Photo Library, we are transported back through time to witness an important chapter in Britain's scientific heritage at Kew Observatory.
