Very Large Telescope being built at Cerro Paranal

Very Large Telescope (VLT) under construction at the European Southern Observatorys site at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The VLT will consist of four 8.2-metre telescopes side by side, which can work either individually or in combination. Together they provide the light-collecting power of a single 16-metre telescope, making the VLT the worlds largest optical telescope. The VLT can be used to detect parts of the spectrum ranging from near-ultraviolet to infrared light of 25 nanometres wavelength. It is due to be completed soon after 2000. Photographed in 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring construction of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The VLT, a project undertaken by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), is set to become the world's largest optical telescope upon completion. In this image taken in 1997, we witness four colossal 8.2-metre telescopes being built side by side, forming an extraordinary sight against the backdrop of the South American landscape. The VLT's unique design allows each individual telescope to function independently or combine their powers to emulate a single massive 16-metre telescope. This innovative approach grants astronomers unparalleled light-collecting capabilities and opens up new possibilities for exploring our universe. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, these telescopes can detect various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum ranging from near-ultraviolet to infrared light with remarkable precision down to a wavelength of just 25 nanometres. Such versatility enables scientists to delve into astrophysical phenomena and unravel mysteries that were once beyond reach. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and our unyielding curiosity about what lies beyond our planet. The completion of this monumental endeavor was eagerly anticipated around the turn of the millennium when it was expected to be finalized shortly after 2000. This stunning image serves as a testament not only to human ingenuity but also highlights international collaboration in pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of the cosmos.
