Very Large Telescope being built at Cerro Paranal
VLT construction. One of the buildings that will house part of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the European Southern Observatorys site at Cerro Paranal, Chile, during construction. This building will contain an 8-metre telescope. This will work either individually or in combination with identi- cal telescopes in three neighbouring buildings. Together they provide the light-collecting power of a single 16-metre telescope, making the VLT the worlds largest optical telescope. The VLT can be used to detect parts of the spectrum ranging from near-ultraviolet to infrared light of 25 nanometres wavelength. It is due to be completed soon after 2000. Photographed in 1997.
