LM of micromechanical accelerometers

Micromechanic accelerometer. Light micrograph of micromechanical accelerometers used in car airbags. Each one has a set of interlocking teeth (such as at centre) which can move relative to one ano- ther. They contain inductors, devices which gener- ate an electric current in response to a change in the magnetic field. During a high acceleration or deceleration, the teeth move towards each other, causing a change in the magnetic field. The signal from the inductors is then amplified to activate a system which inflates the air-bag. This device has been manufactured, using the same techniques used to make silicon chips, for Daimler-Benz in Germany. Magnification: x100 at 6x9cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of micromechanical accelerometers, specifically designed for car airbags. The image reveals a cluster of these tiny devices, each featuring interlocking teeth that can move independently from one another. These remarkable accelerometers incorporate inductors, which are capable of generating an electric current when exposed to changes in the magnetic field. During moments of high acceleration or deceleration, such as during a sudden impact or collision, these interlocking teeth swiftly converge towards each other. This movement triggers a significant change in the surrounding magnetic field. To harness this transformation into action, the signal generated by the inductors is amplified and utilized to activate an inflation system for the airbag. Remarkably, these micromechanical accelerometers have been manufactured using cutting-edge techniques akin to those employed in producing silicon chips. Developed for Daimler-Benz (not mentioning commercial use), this technological marvel exemplifies how nanotechnology and microengineering intertwine to enhance automotive safety measures. The light micrograph provides us with a closer look at this groundbreaking device at 100 times magnification on a 6x9cm scale. Its complexity and precision highlight the incredible advancements made within micromechanics and sensor technology fields. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of innovation for safer driving experiences worldwide.
