Lorenzo de Medici, Italian statesman

Lorenzo de Medici (1449-1492), Italian statesman, historical lithograph. The powerful Medici family combined running the Medici bank with being the de facto rulers of the Republic of Florence. Lorenzo was a supporter of artists and writers during the height of the Italian Renaissance and his court included artists such as da Vinci, Botticelli and Michaelangelo. He supported the development of humanism and expanded the Medici library with classical works that he had copied and disseminated across Europe. Although he managed to defend Florence against invasion by Naples, his humanist legacy died with him when Florence was taken over by Savonarola. Published in The life of Lorenzo de Medici, 1825, by William Roscoe

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the essence of Lorenzo de Medici, an influential Italian statesman who left an indelible mark on history. Lorenzo, a member of the powerful Medici family, not only managed their renowned bank but also held significant control over the Republic of Florence during its golden age. Known as a great patron of the arts, Lorenzo's court attracted some of the most brilliant minds of the Italian Renaissance. Artists like da Vinci, Botticelli, and Michelangelo flourished under his support and guidance. Moreover, he played a crucial role in promoting humanism by expanding the Medici library with classical works that were meticulously copied and disseminated throughout Europe. Despite successfully defending Florence against Naples' invasion, Lorenzo's legacy as a humanist came to an abrupt end when religious reformer Savonarola took over the city after his death. Nevertheless, this historical lithograph serves as a testament to Lorenzo's profound impact on Florentine society during his reign. Published in 1825 by William Roscoe in "The Life of Lorenzo de Medici" this artwork beautifully encapsulates both the grandeur and intellectual prowess associated with one of Italy's most prominent figures from the 15th century. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured every detail within this monochrome print – from Lorenzo's dignified expression to his regal attire – allowing viewers to immerse themselves in this fascinating period of European history.
