Lung specimen diseased with emphysema
Emphysema. Specimen of sectioned human lung tissue diseased with pulmonary emphysema. At left is the affected lung area (black) with severe lung damage at far left. Normal lung tissue is at right. The scale reference is in centimetres. Emphysema is a disease in which the tiny air sacs (alveoli), the sites of gas exchange, become enlarged & the walls separating them damaged. As here, the walls may collapse. As a result carbon dioxide builds up in the blood and oxygen uptake is restricted, leading to breathlessness, wheezing, bluish skin and a chronic cough. Emphysema is usually caused by smoking. The disease is incurable, & if extensive areas of lung are damaged, death usually results

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting print from Science Photo Library captures the devastating effects of emphysema on a human lung specimen. The image showcases a sectioned lung, with the left side displaying the affected area in stark black, depicting severe damage caused by this debilitating disease. In contrast, the right side shows healthy lung tissue for comparison. Emphysema is a progressive condition where the air sacs in the lungs become enlarged and their walls deteriorate. As depicted here, these delicate structures may even collapse entirely. Consequently, this leads to impaired gas exchange as carbon dioxide accumulates in the blood and oxygen uptake becomes restricted. Symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, bluish skin discoloration, and chronic cough often plague those afflicted by emphysema. Primarily caused by smoking cigarettes or exposure to harmful chemicals over an extended period of time, emphysema has no known cure. When extensive areas of the lungs are damaged beyond repair like what can be seen in this photograph's darkened region, it typically results in death. This thought-provoking image serves as a somber reminder of both the destructive power of smoking and our fragile respiratory system's vulnerability to diseases like emphysema. It underscores why preventative measures such as quitting smoking and maintaining good respiratory health are crucial for preserving life and well-being.
