Meathook Galaxy (NGC 2442) C014 / 5033

Meathook Galaxy (NGC 2442), optical and infrared image. This is a wide-field view, which shows a much broader view than would be obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. It was obtained by the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at La Silla, Chile. It includes the whole galaxy and the surrounding sky, and clearly shows the asymmetric spiral arms. The longer of the two arms has intense star formation, which is visible here as a pink glow due to the ionising radiation of young stars. NGC 2442 is some 55 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Volans. Image published in 2011
