Military telephone, 1900

Military telephone. Historical artwork of French soldiers using a Berthon telephone at the end of the 19th century. Berthon invented a microphone, known as the Berthon system, which improved the quality of the telephone, which had been invented in 1876. The apparatus shown here involves the unwinding of the telephone wire carried on the back of one of the soldiers (right). The correct functioning of the telephone requires the system to be electrically earthed using the pointed metal stick at lower right. Systems like this allowed better communication by French armies. Artwork from A Travers l Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900)

The illustration showcases two uniformed soldiers amidst a war-torn landscape, one carrying an unwound telephone wire on his back while the other operates the apparatus. To ensure proper functioning, an electrical grounding is achieved using a pointed metal stick at their disposal. The significance of this technological advancement cannot be overstated; it enabled more efficient and effective communication among French armies during times of conflict. The portable nature of these field telephones allowed for rapid deployment and immediate connectivity across different battlefields. As we delve into this historical masterpiece, we are reminded of how far telecommunications have come since its inception in 1876. This artwork serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of improved methods for connecting with one another.
