Mir space station construction, 1986
Mir space station construction, at the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Centre, Moscow, Russia. This Soviet space station was launched in stages, starting from February 1986. Over the next few years, additional modules were added to the space station. This stage of the construction of part of the space station was photographed on 12 July 1986. Mir spent 15 years in orbit around the Earth, being used by Soviet and then Russian cosmonauts to carry out numerous scientific experiments. After it was abandoned, it was deorbited on 23 March 2001, breaking-up over the Pacific Ocean

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the construction of the Mir space station in Moscow, Russia. Taken on 12 July 1986 at the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Centre, this image showcases the assembly process of one of humanity's most remarkable technological achievements. The Soviet Union embarked on launching Mir in stages, starting from February 1986. Over the course of several years, additional modules were added to expand its capabilities as a research station orbiting Earth. The dedication and expertise of Russian engineers and workers are evident in this snapshot, as they meticulously piece together various components to create this extraordinary structure. Mir served as a hub for scientific experiments conducted by both Soviet and Russian cosmonauts during its impressive 15-year lifespan. It symbolized human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our home planet. However, after it was abandoned, Mir met its fate on 23 March 2001 when it re-entered Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. This photograph not only commemorates an important milestone in space exploration but also pays tribute to all those who contributed their skills and passion to make such advancements possible. It stands as a testament to mankind's ability to push boundaries and explore new frontiers through technology and innovation.
